Job Description

Cave Hill Cemetery & Arboretum is seeking an experienced and visionary Head Horticulturist to lead all gardening and landscape operations across our historic grounds. This is a rare opportunity to shape the beauty and biodiversity of one of Louisville’s most treasured landmarks, home to more than 175 years of history, monumental art, and remarkable plant collections.

As Head Horticulturist, you will oversee the planning, design, installation, and maintenance of high-quality landscapes and gardens, while ensuring excellence in visitor experience and operational efficiency. You will supervise a skilled horticulture and landscaping team and work closely with our Head Arborist to enhance and expand the Level 2 accredited arboretum.

HIGHLIGHTED DUTIES

  • Lead, train, and mentor a team of gardeners and landscaping staff.
  • Design, plan and execute seasonal displays, garden installations, and large-scale landscape projects.
  • Align design and maintenance with site aesthetics, sustainability goals, and visitor experience.
  • Collaborate with the Arboretum Manager and other staff on planting designs and special projects.
  • Oversee plant health care, soil management, turf care, irrigation systems, and pest management.
  • Manage horticultural inventories, tools, and equipment.
  • Ensure all work meets environmental, safety, and regulatory standards.
  • Support special events, education programs, and community engagement initiatives.

 HIGHLIGHTED REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, Arboriculture, or related field (Master’s preferred; equivalent experience considered).
  • 7+ years of leadership experience in public gardens, large-scale landscaping, or horticultural operations.
  • Demonstrated expertise in landscape design, plant care, and team leadership.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Professional certifications such as ISA Certified Arborist strongly preferred.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all conditions and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • A creative, hands-on leader with a passion for horticulture, sustainability, and excellence.
